Research complements classroom for undergrads

Chemistry junior Daryl Wernette of Remus is working with James L. Dye, University distinguished professor emeritus of chemistry, on research involving the addition of alkali metals to an all-silica Zeolite. Zeolites are important catalysts in a number of industries, including the oil industry. This spring Dye received a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Senior Scientist Mentor Initiative for 2001 award for his commitment to close advising and mentoring of undergraduate research students. He will use the $20,000 award to work with students on on-going research and plans to initiate various studies that include student involvement. "Although at the cutting edge of research, the techniques used within the laboratory are well within the capabilities of undergraduate students," Dye said. "I really like working with undergraduates because they are so eager to learn." Dye, who retired in 1994, has personally supervised the research projects of more than 50 undergraduates.
