Broadway hits, national acts highlight Wharton Center 2008-09 schedule
Compiled by MSU News Bulletin Staff
The Wharton Center has announced its 2008-09 schedule, including a wide range of Broadway hits, national and international musical acts and home-grown performers and performances.
Among the highlights of the Broadway Series lineup are Tony Award-winning play “Frost/Nixon,” starring Stacy Keach; the new musical “Legally Blonde;” the story of hope, “The Color Purple;” the newest production of the musical, “Grease;” and winner of eight Tony Awards, “Spring Awakening.”
In addition, back by popular demand are two Wharton Center fan favorites: “Mamma Mia!” for one week only, and a five-week engagement of Disney’s “The Lion King,” now in its eleventh sold-out year on Broadway and one of the most successful touring shows on record.
Other returns productions include Michigan Opera Theatre’s presentation of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.”
The 2008-09 Farm Bureau Insurance Classics at Wharton Center Series includes such powerhouse performers as violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter, Russia’s Kirov Orchestra, and Joshua Bell.
The Farm Bureau Insurance Dance Series features three companies from three different continents: Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Russian National ballet Theatre and DanceBrazil.
The WJZL Jazz at Wharton Center Series includes Sophie Milman; a Motown-inspired new piece of jazz by Wynton Marsalis; and the return of innovative jazz pianist Keiko Matsui.
Wharton Center’s Michigan Radio World Music Series will present Latin band Tiempo Libre and Japan’s virtuoso percussion ensemble, KODO.
Other season highlights include the popular Act One Family Series, the MSU Professors of Jazz in “Jazz Kats - Jazz for Kids,” and the APCapital World View Lecture Series.
The 2008-09 season offers more than 40 unique attractions. “For more than 25 years, Wharton Center has generated state and national prominence for its success with touring megahits and sold-out sensations,” says executive director Mike Brand. “The center is much more than a space to just entertain; it is a place to educate, engage and inspire.”
